Favorites Dallas Activities

One of the best parts about SMU is that you’re just 10 minutes from Downtown Dallas. It’s impossible to ever get bored at SMU, especially with a city like Dallas to explore. Growing up in a suburb just 40 minutes from SMU, my family often did not visit Dallas. Since coming to SMU, I’ve had the chance to explore more of this great city. Here are some of my favorite things to do in Dallas.

  • Katy Trailkt
    • Just half a mile from the south edge of campus, the Katy Trail is a path for jogging, walking, roller blading, and bicycling that runs through the Uptown and Oak Lawn areas. The whole trail is 3.5 miles each way, 7 miles if you’re feeling super ambitious if you want to run the whole thing. Going to the Katy Trail is a perfect way to get your exercise in when the weather is nice. I love going to the trail for half-marathon training or to just go on a nice long walk with friends.
  • Dallas World Aquarium
    • The Dallas World Aquarium is more than just your average aquarium. Its five exhibits feature typical aquarium animals but also everything from monkeys to sloths to manatees. Your adventure begins at the top of the rain forest and continues all the way down through exciting features including a South African and Mayan exhibit. The aquarium is set up in a really great way and is definitely a Dallas attraction you want to check out.

  • Dallas Arboretum
    • dallas-arboretumIf there’s one thing you need to put on your fall bucket list, it’s the nationally-acclaimed pumpkin village at the Dallas Arboretum. Every year the Arboretum brings in over 75,000 pumpkins, gourds, and squash to build the pumpkin village. A visit to the Pumpkin Village will definitely get you in the fall mood and provides a great photo opp. The Arboretum is also great year round and a beautiful place to go walk around or have a picnic.
  • North Park Mall
    • Just 3 exits down from SMU is one of my favorite malls, North Park. North Park features so many great stores from Nordstrom to Nike to Tory Burch to Lush Cosmetics. They also host a lot of great events, and my sophomore year I got the chance to meet one of my favorite designers, Tory Burch.tb
  • Texas State Fair
    • texas-star-ferris-wheel-at-the-state-fair-of-texas.jpgSomehow I made it 18 years in Texas without experiencing the Texas State Fair. It’s definitely something everyone should experience at least once. From fried food to rides it’s sure to be a great time. It wouldn’t be a trip to the fair without riding the Ferris Wheel, and you can even see the Dallas skyline from the top. Pro tip: take the Dart to skip out on sitting in tons of traffic and paying for parking.
  • Klyde Warren Park
    • Klyde Warren Park is an urban green space built over the recessed Woodall Rodgers Freeway between Pearl and St. Paul streets in downtown Dallas. There are always tons of free activities in the Park from yoga to lecture series to outdoor concerts and films. Each day there is also a variety of food trucks at the park. Get a break from the city and check it out!
